NIJO CASTLE
On Reproducing the Nijo Castle Wall Paintings
Nijo Castle's Ninomaru Palace, located in the central district of Kyoto, is well known for its wall paintings (amounting up to more than a thousand paintings) by the Kano Tanyu school, completed in 1626. Although they are registered under Important Cultural Property, these wall paintings were in dire need of immediate conservation due to damage caused by aging. In 1972, Kyoto City entrusted our Institute with a reproduction project to conserve the original wall paintings. In order to preserve the genuine atmosphere of the Palace, we reproduced the paintings using patinated colors.
Of Nijo Castle’s five major sections (the Tozamurai, Shikidai, Ohiroma, Kuroshoin and Shiroshoin), reproduction procedures for the Ohiroma and Kuroshoin sections were successfully completed. Newly replicated paintings have been reinstated into the walls, while the original paintings are kept under safe storage. |
